10 Commandments

Summer 2018

Here, with all due modesty, is my version of The Ten Commandments for making it over the line.

And, as with the original, it’s entirely up to you whether you accept or break them.  I broke 9 of them – thankfully I managed to take sunscreen thanks to Andy Lane mentioning it the day before, otherwise I would have failed all 10!!

Having now done it these 10 pointers would have all helped me do it in a better time and arrive in a far better state
  1. Do train hard in the months before ideally using a tried and tested programme. Keep motivated and don’t lose enthusiasm for training!

  2. Train for a week up to the swim and then take it easy with sleep ins if possible (Milk the whole thing to death)

  3. Do have a TOTAL rest on the day before the swim and have a big sleep in

  4. Eat well throughout the day before the event and have a good hearty dinner

  5. Go to bed by 7pm with everything ready having made up a checklist beforehand of equipment, timings and directions to get to the swim

  6. NEVER EVER NEVER EVER use any new equipment for the swim

  7. Don’t forget sunscreen no matter the weather

  8. Try not to get up too early for the swim if you can avoid it and do any registering before the event if you can

  9. Have a really good breakfast of porridge

  10. Be clear about the swim route and have timed targets
